The village was the capital of the island until the middle 1800s. Traces of this period can be seen in the old mansions, the churches and the ruins of the castle at the top of the village. Pyrgos is 5 km from Santorini Airport and 5 km from Athinios Port.

The impressive old wine vats can still be admired through a glass deck in some suites.
