Grekisk mytologi säger att när de grekiska gudarna hade färdigställt sitt palats på berget Olympos fanns det några stenar kvar. Då tog Zeus dessa stenar och kastade dem ner i Egeiska havet. Som ett resultat bildades Skiathos och de nordliga Sporaderna.
